Ingredients
Scale
- 200g (about 7 oz) high-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa recommended)
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1–2 tbsp sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
- Pinch of cinnamon or a dash of salt (optional, for added flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare Ingredients: Chop the dark chocolate into small pieces to ensure it melts evenly. Measure out the milk and heavy cream.
- Heat Milk and Cream: In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the milk and cream. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is steaming but not boiling (about 5 minutes). Stir gently to prevent the milk from burning.
- Melt the Chocolate: Reduce the heat to low and add the chopped dark chocolate. Stir continuously with a whisk to help the chocolate melt smoothly into the milk and cream mixture.
- Whisk and Achieve the Right Consistency: Continue whisking for 3-5 minutes until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture becomes thick and velvety. The more you whisk, the smoother and creamier the texture will become. If you want a thicker hot chocolate, add more chocolate; for a thinner version, add a little more milk.
- Add Sweeteners and Flavor: Taste the hot chocolate, and if desired, add sugar and vanilla extract. You can also sprinkle in a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of salt for a richer flavor.
- Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into mugs or small cups. Garnish with whipped cream, shaved chocolate, marshmallows, or a cinnamon stick if desired. Serve immediately and enjoy.
Notes
- Chocolate Selection: For the best flavor, choose high-quality dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa. This will provide a rich, intense chocolate flavor. You can mix dark and milk chocolate for a sweeter option.
- Dairy Alternatives: If you prefer a dairy-free version, substitute the milk and cream with almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. Keep in mind that the flavor and texture may vary.
- Spices & Flavor Add-ins: Experiment with adding spices like cinnamon, cayenne pepper, or cardamom to create your own signature flavor. A splash of coffee liqueur or brandy can also make this a festive, adult-only treat.
- Storage & Reheating: Leftover hot chocolate can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. When reheating, do so gently over low heat, whisking occasionally. Avoid microwaving as it can cause the chocolate to seize or become grainy.
