For the Dough:
- 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2 tsp sugar
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the Filling:
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
For Topping:
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
- Additional grated Parmesan cheese
For Serving (Optional):
- Warm marinara sauce
- Garlic aioli
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix until a shaggy dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
2. Prepare the Filling and Toppings:
- Mix mozzarella and Parmesan cheese in a small bowl.
- In another bowl, mix melted butter with minced garlic and parsley for topping.
3. Shape the Breadsticks:
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 10 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a rectangle (about 6×3 inches). Place a tablespoon of cheese mixture down the center of each rectangle.
- Fold the dough over the cheese, pinching the edges tightly to seal, and roll into a breadstick shape.
4. Bake the Breadsticks:
- Arrange the breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet. Brush them with the garlic butter mixture and sprinkle additional Parmesan on top.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
5. Serve:
- Allow the breadsticks to cool slightly. Serve warm with marinara sauce or garlic aioli for dipping.
